What is an Ale

Posted: January 7, 2013 in Uncategorized

An Ale is one category of beer. The other category is a Lager but I will get into that in an upcoming post. With this post I wanted to get into what make a beer fall into the Ale category. It all starts off when the beer is being brewed. An Ale is typically brewed at a temperature between 60 to 75 degrees F and the brewing cycle is very quick. A typical brewing cycle of an Ale is a few weeks but can be brewed in as little as a week. When brewing an Ale top fermentation is the method used , meaning that the yeast will settle on top instead of in the middle or bottom during the fermentation process. This type of brewing process is what gives the Ale the full body, robust taste of the beer. During the process hops will be added to the malt barley. These hops that are added will make the beer a little bitter and  will help offset the fruitful taste of the malt. I know that people love to have the beer ice cold when drinking it but remember that Ales are often served at room temperature.
